The Sporades: Greece's Green Islands

Pine-covered hills, crystal waters, and the Greece I fell in love with. I lived on Skiathos for a year — and got married there.

The Sporades are different. While the Cyclades are rocky and white, the Sporades are lush and green — covered in pine forests that tumble down to turquoise bays.

I didn't just visit these islands. I lived on Skiathos for a year. And I got married there.

The Islands

Skiathos: The most developed of the group, but still nothing like Mykonos or Santorini. Famous for Koukounaries beach and its old town filled with bougainvillea-draped lanes.

Skopelos: The "Mamma Mia" island, though the locals have mixed feelings about the fame. More peaceful than Skiathos, with beautiful churches and plum orchards.

Alonissos: The quietest of the three main islands. Home to a marine park protecting monk seals. Perfect for those who want complete escape.

Why I Love the Sporades

The Food

The Sporades have their own culinary character.

Cheese pie (Tiropita): The Skiathos version is distinctive.

Seafood: Fresh from the Aegean, simply prepared.

Local wine: Small production, rarely exported.

When to Visit

The Sporades are best from late May through September. July and August are busiest — June and September offer better balance.

Unlike the Cyclades, the Sporades don't get the fierce meltemi winds, making them gentler for sailing and swimming.

Getting There

Fly into Skiathos (summer flights from Athens and some European cities) or take the ferry from Volos on the mainland. From Skiathos, boats connect to Skopelos and Alonissos.

My Recommendations

These islands changed my life. Let me help you discover them too.
